Job Title: Environmental Superintendent

Environmental Superintendent required for mining company in Marampa, Sierra Leone.

​

Role purpose

The role of the Environmental Superintendent is to maintain and improve the Environmental Management System for the Marampa Mine.  He/she will manage a small team of environmental advisors and technicians to support senior management in managing environmental risks and achieving environmental objectives.

​

Accountabilities

 

  • He/she will be accountable for the following:

  • Identifying and assessing environmental impacts and risks at the mine

  • Specifying the work necessary to comply with the environmental license and other requirements.

  • Formulating project plans to achieve and/or maintain compliance and manage environmental risks.

  • Supporting function managers on site to enable them to provide appropriate input to the compliance process.

  • Providing one-on-one guidance to colleagues in the management team that will assist them in achieving compliance.

  • Monitoring compliance against the environmental license and other requirements.

  • Advising colleagues on areas that require improvement, taking cognisance of new knowledge, so that the mine’s environmental performance is in accordance with good international practice.

  • Providing the mine’s Safety and Environment manager and the company’s Head of Environment with information, analysis, and insights needed to track and improve environmental performance.

  • As a managerial role holder, he/she will also be accountable for the following:

  • Own effectiveness as an SLM employee;

  • The outputs and working behaviours of subordinates;

  • Sustaining a team of subordinates capable of producing those outputs;

  • Continuously improving the processes used by the team in delivering outputs;

  • Exercising effective managerial leadership in relation to his/her subordinates;

 

​KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

 

  • Preferably a Master’s degree in Environmental Science or Environmental Engineering

  • 7 years’ environmental experience in extractives industries

  • 3 years managerial experience

  • Proficient in environmental management system establishment

  • Knowledgeable in water and waste management

  • Some knowledge of ecosystem processes

  • Some knowledge of environmental chemistry

  • Good understanding of legal and other requirements related to environmental performance

  • Proficient in environmental risk identification and assessment

  • Sound financial management

  • Good computer skills (MS Office, MS Projects, ArcGIS)

  • Good communication skills (written and oral)

  • Previous exposure to multi-national, ethnic and cultural environments

  • Full driving licence
