Miro Forestry (“Miro”) is a sustainable plantation forestry business with operations in Ghana and Sierra Leone, establishing commercial forests for the production of wood products.

The Finance Manager will be based on Miro’s Yoni Plantation Estate, near Mile 91, and engaged by Miro’s Sierra Leone operating company (Miro Forestry (SL) Limited).

 

Job Description:

The Finance Manager’s core duty will be overseeing and taking full responsibility for the financial management and accounting functions of Miro Forestry (SL) Limited (the “Company”). This shall include being intimately involved in annual budgeting, managing and ensuring adherence to the Company’s chart of authorities, systems and controls, posting accounts and overseeing annual audits, and managing the Company finance clerk, store keeper and any other direct reports.

The position requires a dynamic individual with a tertiary qualification in financial management and accounting, with excellent organisation, communication and computer skills. The individual must be self-motivated and team oriented, able to work independently and committed high work quality standards. The Finance Manager will report directly to the General Manager based on site at Yoni Plantation Estate, and functionally report to the Group CFO based out of the United Kingdom. The Finance Manager shall operate from the Company’s Yoni Plantation, near Mile 91, and occasionally from the Company’s Freetown head office.

 

Responsibilities:

  1. Department Lead Finance & Accounting

    • Responsibility for the Company’s finance and accounting functions;

    • Lead and develop the finance team;

    • Direct management of finance clerks, store keeper and any other direct reports;

  2. Budgeting and accounts reporting

    • Prepare the annual budgets together with the General Manager and Group CFO;

    • Prepare monthly rolling forecast and management accounts (BS, P&L and cash flow statement) including commentary on variance against budget;

    • Continue to develop operational controlling instruments (plantation & sawmill);

    • Cost accounting for plantation and saw mill / industrial operations;

    • Carry out reviews and evaluations for cost-reduction opportunities;

    • Support the Group CFO in the preparation of periodic statutory accounts;

    • Manage and control submissions for capital and operational expenditure;

  3. Internal Control, audit & tax

    • Overall control of all financial transactions and accountancy matters, including the Companies internal control system;

    • Upkeep and improve internal control system together with Group CFO;

    • Conduct internal audits to ensure compliance with company standards and regulations (e.g. procurement, human resources);

    • Ensure adherence too financial, tax and reporting regulatory requirements of all statutory bodies;

    • Manage the annual Company audit by external auditors (and relationship with such auditors) and support the Group CFO in the preparation of statutory accounts;

    • Prepare all monthly & annual tax returns together with tax lawyers;

    • Prepare monthly NASSIT returns;

  4. Insurance/risk management

    • Take responsibility for ensuring insurance is up to date and manage insurance renewal timetables;

  5. Payroll and banking

    • Manage the Company payroll and associated tax payments;

    • Use best endeavours to eliminate cash from the Company, making payments where possible thorough cheques and internet transfers;

    • Manage the company’s banking relationship;

 

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Master degree in Accounting or equivalent qualification from an internationally recognised institution.

  • Chartered Accountant qualification status or similar is a distinct advantage.

  • A minimum of 5 years working experience in a similar management role (experience within an agricultural or production related business is positive).

  • University education or experience working in Europe/USA/Canada/Australia or similar is essential.

  • Good communication skills in English.

  • Proficiency with MS Office is absolutely essential.

  • Experience with accounting software (experience with Microsoft Dynamics GP, the Company’s accounting software, would be a distinct advantage).

  • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written communications, sound presentation, analytical and computer skills.
